In PH309, students learn how to deconstruct a photograph, recognize a photographic genre and the crossovers between genres. Students also learn how to analyze historical and contemporary cultural symbols in a photograph. Students will learn how to articulate what they think and feel about specific photographic images. By learning how to speak about other photographer's work, students will in turn learn to speak about his/her own work.
The majority of this class revolves around writing assignments although students are also asked to work on a final project throughout the course of the term. Students choose any topic or subject that they would like to photograph throughout the class. At the end of the term, students are asked to submit their top images as well as an artist statement discussing the body of work.
